Story
A quiet waterway runs past a dwelling with green shutters, its walls catching the light near a line of willow trees. A sailboat rests near the bank, and the whole scene lies still under a soft pale sky, mirrored in the calm river below. The painting shows a house, a boat, and a river framed as a landscape, painted in oil in 1871, and it is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Claude Monet, born in 1840 and died in 1926, worked within Impressionism and also painted Haystacks. Worth noticing is how the reflection of the house and trees doubles the composition, blurring the line between the structure above and its watery echo below.
