Iris

Story

Clusters of aquatic flowers and leaves fill the canvas, rendered in greens, yellows, blues, and whites through loose, open brushwork. There is no single focal bloom; instead patches of color and gesture suggest irises growing thickly together near water. This piece was painted in 1922 in oil on canvas, and it is held at the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist, Claude Monet (1840–1926), was a French painter associated with Impressionism, also known for his painting Haystacks. Looking closely, the brushwork itself becomes the subject, with individual strokes standing apart from one another rather than blending into smooth, continuous form, so the flowers seem to flicker and shift with the surrounding color rather than hold a fixed outline.
