Story
A pale vase holds a cluster of yellow blossoms rising on green stalks, set upon a brown tabletop with a plain gray backdrop behind it. The composition keeps its focus tight, letting the bright petals stand out against the muted surroundings. This oil painting, titled Jerusalem Artichoke Flowers, was completed in 1880 and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created Impression, Sunrise. Looking closely, the yellow heads seem to catch what little light filters through the gray background, giving the still life a quiet glow.
