Story
A lilac tree bursts into bloom beneath an open sky, its branches heavy with pink and white blossoms set against sunlit green leaves and grass. Figures in garden clothing rest in dappled shade cast across the lawn beneath the tree. Claude Monet painted this scene in 1873 in oil, and it is held today at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, is also known for his painting Impression, Sunrise. One detail worth noticing is how the shadow beneath the lilac tree seems to merge with the figures resting there, blurring the line between the people and the dappled ground around them, giving the whole garden scene a soft, filtered quality under the bright sky above.
