Low Tide at Pourville, near Dieppe

A wide stretch of sand opens toward pale chalk cliffs along a quiet shoreline, with the water pulled far back to reveal the exposed beach beneath an open blue sky. The scene captures the hush of a coast emptied by the retreating sea, its golden-brown sand catching soft light while the cliffs rise in the distance. This piece, titled Low Tide at Pourville, near Dieppe, was painted in 1882 using oil on fabric, and it is held today at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created the well-known canvas Impression, Sunrise.
