Story
A quiet stretch of water opens onto sailing boats scattered near a far-off town, with a stretch of grain field set in the foreground, all beneath a sky glowing in tones of gold and violet as the sun sinks low. This oil painting, titled Marine View with a Sunset, was created in 1875 by Claude Monet and is held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, acquired through the museum's Wilstach purchase fund. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926 and worked in France, became a central figure of Impressionism, a movement reflected in canvases such as Impression, Sunrise. Worth lingering on is the contrast between the warm, radiant sky and the darker silhouettes of the boats and distant shoreline, which gives the whole scene a hushed, glowing stillness.
