Story
A quiet stretch of river unfolds in soft hues, with trees crowding the bank at left while mist softens the whole scene into gentle blues, purples, and whites, the morning light barely breaking through the haze. This oil painting, titled Morning on the Seine, Giverny, was made by Claude Monet in 1897 and is held today at the Mead Art Museum. It came to the museum through the bequest of Miss Susan Dwight Bliss. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within the Impressionist movement and is also known for his painting Impression, Sunrise. Worth lingering on is the way the shoreline trees dissolve into the pale atmosphere, their forms barely holding together against the hush of the water and sky.
