Peony Garden

Story

A garden overflows with peonies beneath a wooden trellis, the blooms painted in reds and pinks against layers of green and earthy brown, giving the scene a dense, lived-in feel. The painting, called Peony Garden, was made in 1887 using oil, and it is held at the National Museum of Western Art. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter, worked within Impressionism, and his notable paintings include Haystacks. One detail worth noticing is how the trellis structure interrupts the thick plantings, giving the loose brushwork of flowers and foliage a sense of underlying order, as if nature were held just barely in check by the wooden framework rising through the greenery and blossoms scattered across the canvas.
