Story
Slender poplars rise in a row along a quiet riverbank, their shapes mirrored in the still water below. A soft blue sky scattered with white clouds stretches above, while the whole scene glows with greens, blues, and touches of earthy brown. The painting dates from 1891 and was made in oil, now kept at the National Galleries of Scotland. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created the well-known work Haystacks. One detail worth noticing is how the trees' reflections double their height, blurring the line between the riverbank and the water's surface.
