Story
A lone figure rests amid a meadow thick with wildflowers, bordered by a stand of tall green trees to one side while a cloud-filled sky stretches overhead. This oil painting, titled Poppy Fields near Argenteuil, was created by Claude Monet in 1875 and is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having entered the collection through a gift from the Annenberg family. Monet, a French painter and graphic artist who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within the Impressionism movement and also produced the notable work Impression, Sunrise. In this scene, the loose brushwork gives the grass and blossoms a sense of movement, while the solitary figure anchors the open, airy landscape and draws the eye toward the quiet exchange between earth and sky.
