Story
A river valley unfolds along a curving path that leads the eye toward a village resting on a hillside in the distance. Trees line the route in soft, earthy tones, while a pale blue sky stretches calmly above the scene. This oil painting, titled Road of La Roche-Guyon, was created in 1880 and is held at the National Museum of Western Art. Its maker, Claude Monet, lived from 1840 to 1926, was a French painter and graphic artist, and worked within the Impressionism movement, also known for Impression, Sunrise. Worth noticing is how the muted earth tones throughout the composition give the landscape a quiet, settled feeling, grounding the winding path and the distant hillside village in a unified atmosphere of color.
