Story
Masses of purple and pink blossoms crowd together beneath green leaves, with dark tree trunks rising through patches of dappled light that scatter across the garden floor. The flowers seem to spill forward in loose, overlapping clusters, giving the whole scene a sense of thickness and shade broken by bright flickers of sun. This oil painting, titled The Artist's Garden in Giverny, was made in 1900 and is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created the notable work Haystacks. Looking closely, the contrast between the deep shadows of the tree trunks and the glowing patches of light on the flowers rewards a slow, careful look.
