Story
A garden path washed in sunlight stretches between beds of flowering plants and walls draped in ivy, leading the eye toward a house set beneath a sky filled with blue and drifting white clouds. Claude Monet painted this scene in 1873, working in oil on canvas, and it is now held at the Art Institute of Chicago. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, was a French painter associated with Impressionism, the movement that also produced his work Impression, Sunrise. Looking closely at the painting, the contrast between the bright, open path and the shadowed greenery along the walls gives the garden a quiet sense of depth. The warm light falling across the blossoms and foliage adds a lively texture to the otherwise calm, domestic setting, drawing attention to the small details within the larger composition of house and garden.
