The Beach at Honfleur

Story

A quiet stretch of shoreline opens onto water dotted with sailboats, with a cliff rising nearby and a lone figure standing on the pebbly sand under a sky filled with white clouds and streaks of blue. This marine scene was painted in 1864 in oil and belongs to the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, having come to the museum as a gift from Mrs. Reese Hale Taylor. The painting is by Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French artist associated with Impressionism, whose notable works include Impression, Sunrise. One detail worth noticing is the tree included in the composition, which adds a touch of green life to the pale tones of sand, sea, and sky, grounding the scene's calm, open atmosphere along the coast.
