Story

A domed church with a slender bell tower stands across open water, its stone softened by hints of blue, pink, and yellow, while small gondolas drift in the foreground. The painting dates from 1908 and was made in oil, now held at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, having entered the collection through the Lockton Collection. Claude Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within Impressionism and is also known for his series of Haystacks. One detail worth noticing is how the colors of the sky and water blend together, giving the architecture a soft, almost dissolving quality rather than sharp, defined edges.
