Story
Rugged cliffs rise above a quiet sea, the water still beneath a soft, pale sky rendered in gentle purples, blues, cream and ochre. The composition balances the hard edge of rock against the open stretch of water and air, letting the muted palette carry the mood of the coastline. This is an oil painting completed in 1897 by Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French artist associated with Impressionism, known also for Haystacks.
Where it works
