Story
A hazy riverside silhouette rises against a sky where seagulls drift and circle, the great building nearly dissolving into fog touched with lilac, rose, and blue tones. This oil painting was created in 1903 and is held today at the Princeton Art Museum. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created the notable work Impression, Sunrise. In this scene, the birds hover close to the water while the mist blurs the architecture into soft washes of color, so that the structure seems to float rather than stand solid, its outline barely holding together under the shifting atmosphere of purple, pink, and pale blue light.
