The Magpie

Story

A quiet winter field stretches beneath a pale sky, bare trees standing against drifts of snow near a wooden gate and far-off houses, all painted in soft whites, blues, and muted greens. The scene is rendered in oil, completed in 1869. The artist, Claude Monet (1840–1926), was French and worked within Impressionism, a movement also reflected in his notable work Impression, Sunrise.
