Story
A quiet, snow-covered countryside stretches under a pale sky, with bare frost-covered trees standing above a frozen stream and a wooden gate near a distant cottage, all rendered in soft whites, grays, and browns. A broad-leaved tree, a chimney, and a fence appear within the scene, and clouds drift overhead while the light falls in contre-jour. The painting, titled The Magpie, was made by Claude Monet in 1868 using oil, and it is held at the Musée d'Orsay, having entered the collection under the credit line RF 1984 164. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, was a French painter associated with Impressionism, a movement reflected in his handling of light and snow here. One detail worth noticing is the fence line cutting across the frozen ground, drawing the eye toward the quiet cottage beyond.
