Story
A quiet village unfolds along a riverbank, with tall trees rising beside a worn path and pale buildings clustered in the distance. The water stretches out in soft blue-green tones, reflecting the gentle palette of greens, blues, and whites that fills the scene. This oil painting, titled The Seine at Bougival, was completed by Claude Monet in 1869. It is held today at the Currier Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through a museum purchase using Currier funds. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, was a French painter associated with Impressionism, a movement that reshaped how artists approached light and everyday scenes. One detail worth noticing is how the whites of the distant buildings catch the eye against the deeper blue-green tones of the water, giving the composition a quiet sense of depth and calm atmosphere along the riverside.
