Story
A line of trees along a riverbank dissolves into its own reflection, the water catching a haze of blue, green, yellow, and white tones that blur the line between land and current. The scene is quiet, with no figures or boats to disturb the stillness of the surface. This piece, titled The Seine at Giverny, was painted in 1897 in oil and is held today at the National Gallery of Art. Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created Haystacks. Looking closely, the trees and their mirrored forms merge so softly that the eye struggles to separate solid shapes from the rippling water beneath them.
