Story
A quiet bend of the river opens before the viewer, lined with willow trees that lean toward the water while a town skyline and scattered buildings sit along the far bank, all painted in gentle blues, greens, and whites. The scene belongs to "The Seine at Lavacourt," painted by Claude Monet in 1880. It is an oil on canvas held at the Dallas Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through the Munger Fund. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within Impressionism and is also known for his painting Impression, Sunrise. One detail worth noticing is how the soft color palette blurs the line between the water's surface and the sky above it, giving the whole riverside scene a hazy, atmospheric calm.
