Story
A quiet river scene unfolds across the canvas, with open green meadows framing calm blue water, slender cypress trees along the banks, and a cloudy sky rendered in muted tones. The painting, titled The Seine at Vétheuil, was made in 1880 in oil on canvas and is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having come to the collection through the Theodore M. Davis bequest. Claude Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926 and worked within Impressionism, is also known for his painting Impression, Sunrise. Looking closely, the soft, subdued palette of the water and sky gives the whole scene a hushed, atmospheric quality that draws the eye gently from the grassy foreground back toward the distant horizon.
