Story

Broken sheets of ice drift along a winding river, caught between banks lined with slender poplars reaching into a soft sky. The scene glows with gentle washes of green, blue, pink, and yellow, suggesting the hush of a thaw settling over the water. This oil on canvas, painted in 1880, belongs to Claude Monet, a French painter associated with Impressionism, also known for Impression, Sunrise.
