Across a wide horizontal canvas, pads of aquatic foliage drift over a surface shimmering with cool tones of blue, green, and white, the water's surface mirroring light and shadow in soft overlapping strokes. The painting dates from 1914 and belongs to the Musée de l'Orangerie. Claude Monet, a French painter who lived from 1840 to 1926, worked within Impressionism, the movement that shaped his approach to light and reflection.
