Story
A broad, horizontal stretch of water fills the composition, its surface covered with drifting lily pads rendered in blues, greens, and earthy tones. The painting dates from 1917 and belongs to the collection of the Beyeler Foundation. Created by Claude Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, it reflects the quiet study of light and reflection that defined his approach to water as subject matter.
