Story
A town along a river comes into view, its church rising above a cluster of rooftops that lean into rolling green hills. The palette stays gentle throughout, built from soft blues, greens, and pale yellows that give the whole scene a quiet, airy feel. This oil painting, titled Vétheuil, was created in 1902 by Claude Monet and is held at the National Museum of Western Art. Monet (1840–1926), a French painter associated with Impressionism, also created Impression, Sunrise. Looking closely, the hills seem to fold gently around the town, with the church acting as a steady anchor amid the softened colors and loose brushwork that define the rest of the composition.
