Story
A small town sits along a riverbank, tucked among gentle hills, with the scene built from soft touches of green, blue, and earthy brown. The composition captures a quiet riverside settlement surrounded by sloping terrain rather than any single building or figure, giving the whole view a hushed, open feeling. Claude Monet painted this work in 1880 in oil, and it is now held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, having come to the museum as a gift. Monet, who lived from 1840 to 1926, was a French painter associated with Impressionism, a movement visible in the loose, light-filled handling of this riverside scene. Looking closely, the hills seem to melt into the sky, their edges softened so that land, water, and air appear almost woven together in shifting color.
