Story
A long bridge stretches across a river shrouded in mist, with small boats drifting beneath its arches. The scene unfolds in soft purples, grays, and pale yellows, giving the whole view a hazy, atmospheric quality. This oil painting, titled Waterloo Bridge in London, was created in 1902 and is held today at the National Museum of Western Art. The painter, Claude Monet (1840–1926), was a French artist associated with Impressionism, a movement that favored shifting light and atmosphere over sharp detail. Looking closely, one notices how the bridge itself seems to dissolve into the surrounding haze, with its solid stone structure softened until it almost merges with the river and sky, giving the whole composition a sense of quiet, shifting light caught in a single fleeting moment on the water below.
