Story
Two mounds of harvested wheat sit beneath a wintry sky, their rounded forms covered in snow and set against a field rendered in soft browns, whites, and blues. The sky above glows with a pale golden tone, suggesting early morning light settling over the frozen ground. This oil painting, titled Wheatstacks, Snow Effect, Morning, was completed in 1891 by Claude Monet and is held at the J. Paul Getty Museum, made available through the museum's open content program. Monet, born in 1840 and died in 1926, worked in France and is associated with Impressionism, the movement that redefined how light and atmosphere could be captured on canvas. Looking closely, the stacks appear almost sculptural, their snow-laden surfaces catching subtle shifts of color that separate them gently from the pale expanse of field and sky surrounding them.
