Story

Several jockeys sit mounted on their horses, arranged in a row across an open green field under a wide blue sky, waiting for a race to begin. The scene holds a quiet stillness before the action starts. Edgar Degas painted this work in oil in 1885, working within the Impressionism movement as a French artist. The piece came from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon and is now held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
