Story
Riders on horseback cluster together in a dry, open field, their forms built from warm browns, dusty yellows, and earthen tones as they wait for a race to begin. The scene is painted in oil on panel, completed in 1882. The work came into the Walters Art Museum through Henry Walters's acquisition. Edgar Degas (1834–1917), a French artist associated with Impressionism, captured this quiet moment of anticipation among jockeys and their mounts.
