Story

A group of young ballerinas in soft blue costumes work through exercises along a wooden rail, set inside a rehearsal room with pale green walls and large windows letting in daylight. The composition captures a moment of practice rather than performance. Made with pastel on cardboard in 1875, the piece belongs to Edgar Degas (1834–1917), a French artist associated with Impressionism, whose notable work The Ballet Class shows a similar interest in dance subjects.
