Story
A group of young ballet students gather in a studio lined with wooden wainscoting, the room filled with natural light as they practice their steps. Most wear white tutus, their postures caught mid-exercise, while one girl stands apart in an orange shawl draped over her shoulders. The painting, titled The Dance Lesson, was made in 1879 by Edgar Degas in oil, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. Degas, who lived from 1834 to 1917 and was French, worked within the Impressionist movement, bringing attention to behind-the-scenes moments of dancers rather than staged performances. The warm orange shawl stands out sharply against the cool whites of the tutus and the muted tones of the studio, drawing the eye toward that single figure amid the practicing group.
