The Balcony

Story

A group of figures gathers on a balcony enclosed by a green railing, dressed in white and dark clothing, some holding flowers and fans while the space behind them fades into shadow. Among those shown are Antoine Guillemet, Berthe Morisot, and Fanny Claus, and a beach umbrella appears in the composition as well. The scene functions as a group portrait within the genre tradition, painted by Edouard Manet in 1868 in oil on canvas, and the work is held today at the Musée d'Orsay. Manet, who lived from 1832 to 1883 and worked in France, is also known for his painting A Bar at the Folies-Bergère. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the pale clothing of the figures and the deep darkness of the interior space behind the railing.
