Story

A tapestry scene unfolds in a garden thick with leaves and blossoms, where attendants cluster below as Venus departs in her chariot, rendered in a style recalling medieval art. Woven from wool, silk and linen, the piece carries the decorative detail Edward Burne-Jones brought to textile design. Burne-Jones, born in 1833 and died in 1898, worked within the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Symbolism. The piece came to the Detroit Institute of Arts as a gift from George G. Booth.
