Story
A rounded sandy hill rises in yellow-green tones, its slope climbing toward a cluster of houses with dark roofs set against a pale sky. The scene is quiet, with no figures present, letting the land and the structures dominate the view. This is Corn Hill (Truro, Cape Cod), painted by Edward Hopper in 1930 in oil, now held at the McNay Art Museum, having come from the Mary and Sylvan Lang Collection. Hopper, who lived from 1882 to 1967, worked within American realism, giving his scenes of ordinary places a careful, grounded clarity. One detail worth noticing is how the pale sky presses close against the dark rooflines, sharpening the contrast between the soft hill and the solid houses above it.
