Story

A nearly empty room with pale walls and a greenish floor opens directly onto open water through a doorway, the ocean rendered in a soft, understated blue, with little else to distract the eye. The composition is rendered in oil by Edward Hopper (1882–1967), an American painter associated with American realism. The piece entered its collection through a bequest, and it is held at the Yale University Art Gallery.

Where it works
