Story

A heavy-leaved tree dominates the near view, its dark canopy set against open fields that roll toward a horizon beneath a sky thick with shifting clouds. Soft browns, greens, and whites mix across the ground and air, giving the scene a quiet, weathered feel. The picture is an oil on canvas completed in 1897. It was painted by Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901), an American and Canadian painter, photographer, and visual artist, and is held at the SCAD Museum of Art.
