Story
A solitary tree stands bare against a pale backdrop, its brown branches reaching upward in a thin, twisting pattern, while the ground beneath carries darker earth tones. The composition isolates the trunk and limbs, giving the whole scene a quiet, stripped-down feeling of late season growth. This oil painting was made in 1911 and is held at the Leopold Museum. Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was an Austrian artist associated with Expressionism, known also for his work Seated Woman with Bent Knees. Looking closely, the contrast between the delicate, spindly branches and the heavier shadow at the base draws the eye to how little separates the fragile tree from the darker ground below it, a detail that rewards a slower look.
