Approaching Storm

Story

A valley opens around a quiet pond, framed by trees and distant mountains, while the sky above darkens with the look of a gathering storm. Greens, blues, and earth tones blend across the scene, giving the land and water a heavy, atmospheric quality. The piece is an oil on canvas mounted on panel, completed in 1919. Ernest Lawson (1873–1939), a Canadian-American painter associated with the Ashcan School, created this work, now held at The Phillips Collection.
