Brooklyn Bridge

Story

A great bridge arcs over a hazy river, its towers rising above industrial structures along the banks. A reddish moon glows faintly through muted tones of green, brown, and gray, lending the scene a quiet, atmospheric mood. This oil painting dates from 1917 and belongs to a cityscape tradition. Ernest Lawson (1873–1939), a Canadian-American painter associated with the Ashcan School, created the work, now held through the Daniel J. Terra Collection.

Where it works

A muted landscape suited to dens and living rooms, and to hotel lobbies, in a horizontal format.
