Story

Bare trees line a riverbank beside a stone building, rendered in soft greens, whites, and earth tones along the water's edge. The composition carries a quiet, impressionist handling of light and color across the landscape. Painted in oil in 1900, the work is by Ernest Lawson (1873–1939), a Canadian-American painter associated with the Ashcan School. It is held by the Terra Foundation for American Art, having come from the Daniel J. Terra Collection.

Where it works
