La marée haute a Saint-Malô (High tide at St Malô)

A busy shoreline unfolds with white bathing cabins lined along the sand, old fortress walls rising behind, and crowds of figures dressed in the fashions of their time gathered near a blue-green sea. The scene is rendered in oil on canvas, painted in 1911. Ethel Carrick, a British-Australian painter who lived from 1872 to 1951, worked within the Impressionist movement, and this piece entered the Art Gallery of New South Wales through a purchase supported by the Gleeson O'Keefe Foundation.
