Story
A rounded vessel holds upright green stalks topped with blossoms in shades of red, purple, and gold, set before a soft, light-toned backdrop framed by ornamental edges. The arrangement sits centered within the composition, giving the whole scene a balanced, decorative quality. This oil painting, titled Bowl of Tulips, was created in 1916 and is held at the Yale University Art Gallery, having entered the collection through the gift of Mary C. and James W. Fosburgh. The artist, Florine Stettheimer, lived from 1871 to 1944 and worked as a painter, costume designer, and designer. A notable detail is how the painted border frames the flowers, drawing attention to their layered colors against the plain backdrop, lending the whole image a formal, almost theatrical presentation.
