Story
A seated man with a pale face wears a black suit as he rests on a round green rug scattered with pink blossoms. Behind him, sweeping black feathered forms rise against a bright orange background, giving the composition a theatrical, almost stage-like frame. The painting dates from 1922, is rendered in oil, and is held at the Yale University Art Gallery, having come to the museum by transfer from a university library's manuscript papers. It was made by Florine Stettheimer, an American artist who also worked as a costume designer. One detail worth noticing is how the dark, plume-like shapes curl inward toward the figure, pulling the eye back to his still, composed expression at the center of the busy, colorful setting.
