Story

An American flag sits at the heart of the composition, encircled by radiating bursts of color in blue, red, and white that mimic exploding fireworks against a dark backdrop. Painted in oil in 1927 by Florine Stettheimer (1871–1944), an American artist, the piece carries a festive, celebratory energy. It entered the Addison Gallery of American Art as a gift from the Estate of Ettie Stettheimer.
