Heat

Story

A yellow landscape fills the scene, dotted with hanging willow branches and a single sunflower, while reclining figures stretch across warm earth tones in a loose, dreamlike arrangement. The painting, titled Heat, was made by Florine Stettheimer in 1919 using oil, and it is held at the Brooklyn Museum. The work entered the museum's collection as a gift from the Estate of Ettie Stettheimer. Stettheimer, who lived from 1871 to 1944, was an American artist who also worked as a costume designer. One detail worth noticing is how the willow branches drape downward across the composition, framing the reclining forms beneath them and drawing the eye toward the solitary sunflower set against the heated yellow ground.
