Story
Weightless figures drift beneath trees whose branches sag softly downward, while a sun and a banner of mixed colors appear against a pale backdrop. The composition suggests bodies held in suspension rather than standing on solid ground, as though the painted air itself were supporting them. This piece, titled Music, was created in 1920 using oil, and it is held at the Rose Art Museum. Florine Stettheimer, who lived from 1871 to 1944, was an American artist. One detail worth noticing is how the drooping tree limbs curve protectively over the floating figures, framing the scene like a canopy stretched across the pale ground below.
