Zinnias

Story

A white bowl brims with dark green stems and bright zinnias, set against a pale gray backdrop with soft curtains hanging behind it. The arrangement spills outward, giving the flowers a loose, lively shape rather than a tidy bouquet. This piece, titled Zinnias, was painted in 1920 in oil by Florine Stettheimer (1871–1944), an American artist, and today it belongs to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where it came to the collection as a gift from the estate of Ettie Stettheimer. Stettheimer worked as an artist, costume designer, and designer. One detail worth noticing is how the curtains seem to frame the bowl like a stage setting, giving the still life a theatrical quality despite its simple subject.
